Apologies for the gap in events, we’ve been busy. \u00a0We left soggy Fredericksburg yesterday morning. If anybody is intending to go there, probably a day or so is sufficient, but make sure you visit the Capital Ale House …they do the best seared tuna salad and seared beef salad EVER. Coupled with very good cider, excellent staff, and friendly welcome, we enjoyed ourselves despite the rain there.<\/p>\n
However, apart from that, we had done Fredericksburg and set off bright and early Saturday morning, having bade a fond farewell to Jihadi John and his assortment of additional customers who seemed to join us on each taxi trip, to motor south to Virginia Beach. We amused ourselves on the drive trying to recall all the US states, and arrived safely at our hotel at the north end of Virginia Beach. Having been told the town was horrid, we weren’t expecting very much, but walking along the long, long concrete corridor to our room on the 6th floor, we had to admit our hearts were sinking … Blackpool was looking good – until we opened the door of the room to look out over about 5 miles of beautiful clean sand and Boardwalk. It’s amazing, though admittedly not classy. \u00a0We walked up and down the boardwalk, covering (according to my app) about 15km over the day. There was a Caribbean tinpan competition at various points along the front, there were hundreds of little girls competing in a cheerleading competition at the convention centre and a Monsters on the Beach show which consists of good ole boys in souped up vehicles making loop the loops on sand hills on the beach. Sadly we couldn’t get tickets,but we have photos!<\/p>\n
on our evening promenade, we came across some amazing live music being played nearby, and ended up in rocking chairs, grooving along to music from\u00a0Jefferson\u00a0Airplane to blue grass while we froze our socks off! \u00a0Wonderful evening.<\/p>\n
sunday here is Mother’s Day but we got up early and set off for the Back Bay wildlife refuge, about 10 miles south of the resort. We had brekkies and set off, arriving \u00a0by 8.15. We were the only people on a trolley tour which showed us turtles, glossy ibis, white egrets, chickadees, cottonmouth snakes (venomous), otters, coyote tracks, old homesteads, butterflies, ospreys and a variety of waders. What a day. \u00a0My face is beetroot coloured from the sun, we are a bit tired but want to go back tomorrow for a walk through the national park.
