To those of you who have commented on my little travelogue, thank you. It’s good to know you are still with us!
Apologies for the gap in events, we’ve been busy. We left soggy Fredericksburg yesterday morning. If anybody is intending to go there, probably a day or so is sufficient, but make sure you visit the Capital Ale House …they do the best seared tuna salad and seared beef salad EVER. Coupled with very good cider, excellent staff, and friendly welcome, we enjoyed ourselves despite the rain there.
However, apart from that, we had done Fredericksburg and set off bright and early Saturday morning, having bade a fond farewell to Jihadi John and his assortment of additional customers who seemed to join us on each taxi trip, to motor south to Virginia Beach. We amused ourselves on the drive trying to recall all the US states, and arrived safely at our hotel at the north end of Virginia Beach. Having been told the town was horrid, we weren’t expecting very much, but walking along the long, long concrete corridor to our room on the 6th floor, we had to admit our hearts were sinking … Blackpool was looking good – until we opened the door of the room to look out over about 5 miles of beautiful clean sand and Boardwalk. It’s amazing, though admittedly not classy. We walked up and down the boardwalk, covering (according to my app) about 15km over the day. There was a Caribbean tinpan competition at various points along the front, there were hundreds of little girls competing in a cheerleading competition at the convention centre and a Monsters on the Beach show which consists of good ole boys in souped up vehicles making loop the loops on sand hills on the beach. Sadly we couldn’t get tickets, but we have photos!
on our evening promenade, we came across some amazing live music being played nearby, and ended up in rocking chairs, grooving along to music from Jefferson Airplane to blue grass while we froze our socks off! Wonderful evening.
sunday here is Mother’s Day but we got up early and set off for the Back Bay wildlife refuge, about 10 miles south of the resort. We had brekkies and set off, arriving by 8.15. We were the only people on a trolley tour which showed us turtles, glossy ibis, white egrets, chickadees, cottonmouth snakes (venomous), otters, coyote tracks, old homesteads, butterflies, ospreys and a variety of waders. What a day. My face is beetroot coloured from the sun, we are a bit tired but want to go back tomorrow for a walk through the national park. We are having a ball!

You gave me a proper Camp Grenada moment as I read the update today. Let’s hope it stays in the Happy Mode
That made me laugh, it’s not really like that, but we are very happy the sun came out!
Hi Colleen, the weather has been so much better for the last couple of days, witness my beetroot-face, but the weather hasn’t spoiled our fun at all. See you very soon I hope xxx
I miss chickadees; such cute little birds. Sounds as if the weather is picking up somewhat? As in it is not raining? Will avoid mentioning what our weather is like.
Happy American Mother’s Day you two! Xxx.
Thank you Hannah! Your mother is celebrating in style watching ‘Castaway’ on tv!
Hi Lesley. Let me tell you. My sister, Lynne, is in Spain with her five friends who she has known from school. They are on the Costa del sol and having awful weather. Cold and torrential rain. She has rang me tonight and she said they are all freezing and have got colds and sore throats. They are, however, having a great time and making the best of it. Oh by the way Lesley, Lynne is Andrea’s Mum.
I have two other friends who have gone to the Algarve last Monday for 10 nights. They are flying back tonight because of flooding. Weird or what.
You two be good and enjoy your travels ????
Oh it sounds wonderful. I bet Liz is loving the wildlife and birds. I’m still eating the seared beef salad and drinking the cider. Jimmy would have beaten you both recalling all the states. He loves it. So glad the weather has improved. Hate to tell you this – 26 degrees in Manchester today!
Lesley your blog is wonderful to read. What a brilliant experience. Go and rock it girls xxxx ?????????????
Yay! Glad you are enjoying the stories Eileen, please don’t rub it in about the temperature! Can’t remember when I’ve been more soggy than when we were in Fredericksburg ?
