Sunday

I need to update the facts about Liz’s shirt collection … She has 9 virtually identical white shirts as another one was unearthed from the suitcase, which of course gave her the dilemma of which one to wear when we went for lunch in Georgetown to meet Andrea and Johnnie.

We decided, as it was pouring with rain all morning, not to go and get soaked before our lunch date so had a lazy morning reading and drinking coffee.  Neither of us can quite believe how tired we are, maybe it’s jet lag, maybe it’s just an accumulation of tiredness, but fortunately we are getting tired simultaneously so there’s never a problem when a decision needs to be made about returning to the hotel for a sit down!

we took a taxi to Clydes of Georgetown, driving through some lovely residential districts with beautiful houses, along tree lined streets.  Washington has a totally different feel about it from San Francisco, Boston and New York.  Much more genteel and although the city is obviously alive with tourists, we haven’t seen the more tacky tourist things encountered elsewhere.  Andrea and Johnnie are charming, and we had a delightful lunch – 3 of us choosing steak and eggs, while Andrea went for the enormous Belgian waffle.  We are going to meet them again for a happy hour when we return to Washington in 11 days.

in the afternoon we went to visit the Phillips Collection which is a modern art collection, and I have to say that most of the articles on display were lost on me.  However, it was worth the trip to see a huge Hockney of the Grand Canyon, a Delacroix portrait of Paganini, and some Turners.  Culture having been satisfied, we returned to the hotel.

Today we leave Washington, and I am very worried about driving out of the city, although there seems little aggressive driving. It’s just my sense of direction that concerns me.  We are planning on stopping at Arlington cemetery on they way to the Shenandoah national park and the blue ridge mountains of Virginia (on the trail of the lonesome pine!)

hope there will be wifi at the next hotel but don’t worry if not .. We will be in touch again soon.

I hope the drive went OK and that you weren’t too stressed with it all. I will look forward to seeing some pictures of the National Park and mountains…..I bet they’re beautiful.
